Playing with Authority

Continuation of the conference Dance and Racism – The Other Body? (by Tanzkomplizen and Nora Amin as part of the Offensive Tanz für junges Publikum)

Concept, lecture & moderation by Nora Amin

A three hours session designed to cover the intersectionality between education and ‚arts for youth‘ from a critical discourse perspective encompassing theoretical input, workshop exchange and advocacy planning.

16:00-17:00 Impulses

Introduction by Livia Patrizi, Artistic Director of Tanzkomplizen

Followed by a lecture by Nora Amin: "Playing with Authority"

While attempting to redefine "arts", "education" and their connections from a critical perspective, the lecture focuses on the notion of "authority" and how it shapes the pedagogical systems in both domains. Nora Amin examines the processes of transmitting knowledge within the context of "arts for youth", and analyses the strategies of hierarchy, privilege and other-ing versus an alternative and potential sphere of equal knowledge production, plurality, and identity growth via "Playing with Authority".

17:00-18:00 Workshops

A session of workshopping where the participants address some specific questions resulting from the lecture. The session is meant to create individual and collective input from a practise-based perspective. The participants get a chance to apply the topics and analysis to their field of artistic practise, bringing their individual experiences into an exchange within small groups (each of four people) with the goal of reaching a collective view of what the practical challenges are, what needs to be done, and how to operate within each artistic project/institution to create a difference.

18:00-19:00 Creating a Plan of Action

A session that invests the input of the two previous hours and expands it in order to examine the potential of interweaving the capacities of all participants/institutions to create a plan of action while combining efforts of implementation. The participants will be provided with questions about impact, continuity, sustainability, and action-taking. It is a chance to re-visit the notion of activism from the natural steps of solidarity, passing on knowledge, and advocacy, all within the sector of theatre and dance for youth, and via public, artistic and symbolic representations.
